Do you want to put your Shopify store under construction till the site is ready for the launch? Well, that’s a great idea.
Whether creating a new Shopify store or redesigning the existing one, you shouldn’t keep your website domain empty. Instead, put the under-construction page so that people know the store is either under maintenance or coming soon.
Fortunately, Shopify lets you put your Shopify store under construction mode, and in this guide, I will show you how to do it.
How to put a Shopify store under construction?
Creating an under construction page for a Shopify store is fairly simple. There are basically two ways to do that, one by using a built-in feature and the other is using an app.
Let me walk you through both options.
Option 1: Use the password page
Shopify, by default, turns the homepage into a password page for password-enabled stores. You can use this feature to put your store under construction.
Here’s how you can do it –
- Go to Online store> preferences from your Shopify admin.
- Scroll down to the Restrict store access section.
- Enable the “Restrict access to visitors with the password” option
- Enter the password and message for your visitors.
- Click Save.

Now, your store homepage should be replaced by a default Shopify password page. If you want to customize it with a personalized message, follow this step –
Go to Online store>Themes from the sidebar and click the “Customize” button in your current theme section. Next, in the theme editor, click the page selector at the top and select Others> Password page from the dropdown menu.

Now, you are on the password page that you can customize using the elements from the left sidebar. The option can vary depending on your chosen Shopify theme.
Once you’re done with customization, click the Save button in the top-right corner. The homepage of the store will now be updated with the new design.
Option 2: Use a Shopify Page Builder App
In the first option, you don’t have customization flexibility for the password page. You can just change the content and background colors of each section. And it depends on the theme you have chosen for your store.
However, if you want to create an attractive under construction page based on your brand guidelines, you can use one of the Shopify page builder apps or coming soon page apps.
We highly recommend Gempages as it is easy to use and has stunning pre-made page templates. Moreover, it allows you to create unlimited pages on all plans, which can be perfect for creating your store pages. Read GemPages review to learn more about it.
Wrapping up
The primary objective of Under construction pages is to create a buzz around your store before the grand launch and convert visitors into email subscribers, who can later be converted into your first paying customers.
Simply put, a good under construction page should be attractive, tell about your business, and encourages visitors to sign up to your email list for future updates.
So, while creating an under construction page for your store, make sure it is high-optimized for conversion. Here are a few tips that you can consider –
- Keep the copy short
- Add an email sign-up form
- Add a countdown timer
- Offer an incentive to subscribe
- Add social sharing icons
- Make it mobile-friendly
